Devil Mountain Jazz Band

DEVIL MOUNTAIN JAZZ BAND continues to develop their multi-style approach to preserving the popular music of the late 1800’s through the early 1930’s, and the west coast revival jazz of the 1940’s. The eight piece band is best known for the two trumpet sounds of the Joe Oliver and Lu Watters bands and the orchestrated “hot dance” music of the late twenties. You’ll also hear DMJB perform ragtime, blues, “Dixieland” standards, gospel and novelty tunes, and an occasional duck-call by Pete Main, Tom recreating many tunes by Bing Crosby and Ken’s “Country Cross-over” tunes.

The band also recreates the New Orleans-derived hot jazz popularized by Armstrong, Hardin, Biederbecke, Morton, etc., in Chicago in the late twenties. At many jazz festivals, they present special historical concerts celebrating the music of these jazz greats, and a special show, “Bix and Bing”.

On special occasions or festivals, the band expands to 12 to 15 pieces to recreate the big-band sounds of the 1930’s, flying the flag of the Jambalaya Swing Band. Smaller versions of the band play frequently for occasions where this historic music is new to some folks, with the focus on providing a good time through this happy music. Civic concerts, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, church events, wine-tastings, restaurants, piano burnings, parades, are but a few of these events.

Since 1982, Devil Mountain has performed at several hundred jazz festivals, scores of Jazz Society and civic concerts, fourteen jazz cruises, and have held down two monthly dance & concert series in the San Francisco East Bay area at the Pleasanton Hotel and FRIENDS OF JAZZ for 30 years, now at the Danville Grange Hall. They have released ten recordings, most recently, “YOU ASKED FOR MORE”.

Band Members:
KEN KEELER – Leader, BANJO, GUITAR
PETE MAIN – REEDS
GARY NEUMAN – PIANO
TOM BELMESSIERI – CORNET
KEITH BALTZ- BASS
NOEL WEIDKAMP – CORNET, SAX
ALLAN GRISSETTE – DRUMS
GLENN CALKINS – TROMBONE

Ken Brock and

The Jambalaya Swing Band

width: 290px; height: 383px;

The Jambalaya Swing Band patterns itself from the great Bob Crosby and The Bobcats Orchestra. The Instrumentation is 4 Saxophones; 3 trumpets; 1 trombone; piano; bass; and drums. The Crosby Orchestra consisted of one additional trombone. Large dance bands of Jan Garber, Dick Jurgens, Sammy Kaye, Russ Morgan, to name a few the 1930’s and 40’s bands, generally consisted of 10-14 players.

Crosby started in 1935, but didn’t become a “hit” band until he released “Big Noise From Winnetka” and additional “Dixie” selections in 1938. His Instrumentation was centered around a “Dixie” front line or the Piano of Joe Sullivan. Bob fronted the band well into the 1980’s and always was a big draw at The Carnation Stage, and The Plaza Gardens Stage at Disneyland.

Jambalaya’s players:
Saxophones and Clarinets: Rich Lesnik, Stuart Yasaki, Mike Kenney, Bruce Saxton
Trombone: Ron Wetzel
Trumpets: Mack Horton, Noel Weidcamp, Ken Brock
Piano: Rich Owens
Bass: Julianne George
Drums: Ed Margolin

“Jay Paulus’ Society Band”

JPSB Photo

The Jay Paulus’ Society Band prides ourselves on bringing together some of the finest musicians. We mix things up by switching out or adding in talented people we have swung with during other venues.

Band Personnel:
Jim Maihack – on Piano for us today could most assuredly play every instrument in our band and do it all himself and well! His singing voice is velvet soft.
Charlie Gehlback (Dr. Bach) – abounds with energy and distinctive style whether it is Dixie, Swing or even Gospel and makes that Puget sing!
David Rees – our Bass player has a veracious appetite for all musical genres. From Bach to Zydeco, David performs with bands and orchestras that fulfill his musicality.
Charlie Hull – on Reeds, an institution unto himself through Country Western, Dance & Swing and always sharing his euphoria of the music he wants us all to know and love. His vocals are sometimes surprisingly impish.
Ray Rector – on Drums, new to us today but has opened for many talented headliners with RATZ, acting as the warm-up band. With his wife, Becky, they are co-leaders for Z.O.O.M., Zydeco On Our Minds.
Jim Fusaro – “Boy Singer” we know you’ll recognize as the consummate entertainer he remains. You never have to ask twice for him to warble a tune!
Kate Rees – Vocalist Extraordinaire, performing everything from Jazz to Show Tunes and beyond, all with pizzazz! Her background spells PRO all the way.
Barbara, Co-Leader and Vocalist – has a background in drama and musical theater, as well as voice-over work, and was lead vocalist in a 17-piece band.
Jay’s Trombone playing brings the sentimentality and sound of a bygone era. You can close your eyes and reminisce to the melodic beats of the Dorseys, Miller, Goodman, Basie, all in one afternoon. Audiences have a love affair with his sound.

“Cell Block Seven Jazz Band”

JPSB Photo
Best watch out, the “boys” have escaped again…
disguised as musicians and armed with a weird collection of antique musical instruments, our favorite cons are breaking into the San Joaquin Dixieland Jazz Club once more to pull off another caper.

Cell Block 7, with its two trumpet front line, has been ganged up since 1981, and is devoted to the West Coast Revival Style of Lu Watters, Turk Murphy, and the Bay City Jazz Band. Other known musical aliases of this talented bunch feature forays into great low brass harmony with a trio of three double bell euphoniums, as well as spirited renditions of classic and novelty tunes, wondrous banjo solos, and romping ragtime piano solos!

While our “musical delinquents” continue to evade the authorities, we hope you’ll be captured by their unique brand of hot jazz and general disregard of acceptable behavior.

Note: Kurt Aubell will be in place of Jack Convery on banjo.
